We do NOT use fire retardant chemical additives to our memory foam. Although many feel it is good enough to sleep on, The Plush Pad is specifically NOT a mattress, is not meant for sleep, and our care label makes clear it is for use with adult supervision only (as should all changing stations).
Changing stations are not required to have the same fire retardant chemicals used in mattresses because the danger of prolonged contact to fire is limited in traditional changing station use. Many fire retardant chemicals such as penta-BDE (polybrominated diphenyl ethers) and deca-BDE used in many mattresses have been linked to problems in brain development and thyroid hormones in pre-natal and newborn babies, and as such have been banned in Europe. We feel that potential of injury from the absolute contact of chemical residue from fire retardants far exceed the chances of fire from proper use of our product, so we made the decision NOT to include those chemicals in the production of our memory foam. That said, to mitigate any foam flammability, there are between 2 and 3 layers of fabric between the memory foam and the baby.
We think long and hard about the comfort and safety of the baby. Part of our decision to use memory foam is due to its body conforming properties that provide support for baby's tiny pressure points. Our memory foam has billions of high-density, elastic micro-cushions with temperature-sensitive cells that warm and get softer when they come in contact with the baby's body. In cooler areas, they stay firm. The cells will literally shift position and reorganize to conform to your baby's tiny contours. Its molecular structure also efficiently absorbs shock to help protect baby's head and neck when laying them down. The result is that the cells shift so the baby doesn't have to, making it a more enjoyable changing experience for both the baby and the parent.
